FACEBOOK is taking over the world! If your not a member or haven't heard of it, facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them.

People use facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.

The site has a search engine, enabling you to search for people who you have lost contact with, as long as they are a member.

Other activities include, swap and share photos and videos, or send instant messages, private or on display.

It's free to join, all you need is an email address, you will then be asked to enter your details, which takes no time at all.

Then search for your friends/colleagues/family and invite them to be your friend, or wait for them to find you.

Only your chosen friends can see your details e.g. name, photos etc, and you can ignore friend requests if you wish.

Ensure you do not put too much of your personal information on there (you can even add your home address!) the site is safe but you never know!

The site enables you to join specific networks e.g a university or a particular area in the country e.g Wales or Manchester.

You can also join different groups, some are tongue in cheek such as Medium Rare Steak Appreciation Society!

And more serious ones such as, Justice for Jamie Bulger petitions.

Even the Free Press has its own group!

facebook was launched on February 4, 2004 and was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, a former Harvard student in America.

Initially the membership of facebook was restricted to students of Harvard College.

Many individual universities were added in rapid succession over the next year.

Eventually, people with a university email address across the globe were eligible to join.

Networks were then initiated for high schools on February 27, 2006 and some large companies.

Since September 11 2006, anyone 13 or older can join.

The name of the site refers to the paper facebooks depicting members of the campus community that some US colleges and preparatory schools give to incoming students, faculty, and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus.

With membership expected to surpass 65 million users by the end of 2008, facebook looks like its here to stay.
