I'd give fans a seat on the board...but there would have to be conditions

WREXHAM FC’s new chairman said he would have no problem with a fans’ representative taking a place on the club board – as long as certain conditions were met.

Ruthin businessman Ian Roberts said the club had made “huge mistakes” in the past but that a truce needed to be called between directors and unhappy fans.

Speaking to the Free Press he outlined his future plans for both rugby and football clubs at the Racecourse.

He said: “There has been an impasse for too long and we have got to put that behind us.

“What’s become apparent to me is that there is an awful lot of deep-rooted support for the club and perhaps the two sides haven’t been able to meet in the middle.

“There are always going to be people who want to have a knock and don’t believe what I’m saying.

“I’m quite happy to discuss issues on a one-to-one basis.

“As long as it is constructive criticism, I will take it on board.

“I know I can’t please all the people all the time.”

When asked whether he would consider accepting a fans’ representative on to the club board he said: “I would have no problem with that – but there would have to be conditions attached.

“We would have to meet and discuss the position and what it forms.

"There has to be common ground.”

He added: “The club has made huge mistakes for which I as current chairman apologise.

“But I believe some of the doubters need to hold their hands up and say ‘let’s call a truce’.”

He also emphasised how important The Racecourse was to the future plans of the club, rubbishing suggestions directors would be against the ground being protected in the council’s new local development plan (LDP).

He said: “It is going to go in the LDP which I have no problem with. Why would we be bringing in the rugby and talking about the investment if that wasn’t the case?

“We see the stadium as a business and it is important we utilise the stadium to its utmost.

“We have to get more use out of the buildings and we have many plans going forward.”

Speaking about making both Crusaders and Reds games more family-orientated, he said: “We are in a position ideally placed now.

"We are attracting a whole new set of supporters with the rugby.

"We can only do that by making the day more enjoyable.”

Last Monday night Mr Roberts was a guest at a meeting of Wrexham’s Supporters’ Trust.

The Trust has £360,000 which it has sought to invest with the aim of purchasing equity in the club.

A Trust spokesman said: “This is good news.

"We are hoping to meet the club in the near future to discuss things and no doubt this will be the topic of the conversation.

"Fans representation would help the club right some of the mistakes that have been made.”
