A HELICOPTER shocked onlookers when it made an emergency landing near the A5.
The helicopter was carrying a five man crew training for deployment in Afghanistan when a serious leak from the helicopter's hydraulics was discovered.
The aircraft, a large Chinook helicopter, was flying from RAF Odiham, in Hampshire to RAF Valley in Anglesey and landed next to the A5 outside Pentrefoelas on August 17.
All the action was caught by 15 year-old Taharka Carrington, who was visiting Wales as part of a 'once in a lifetime' trip from his home on the Caribbean island of Tobago.
Taharka, who is still at school, hopes to become a journalist and writes regular sport reports for his local newspaper.
He corresponds with a British based journalist and a university media lecturer in his effort to improve his chances of reaching a goal that, he says, is hard for someone on his island.
His journalistic skills came in handy when driving through the Welsh countryside he spotted the Chinook landing.
Grabbing his camera, he photographed the helicopter and interviewed the crew to find out what happened.
"It was not serious because the aircraft wasn't in serious danger, but our procedures say we have to land when a problem arises," said the sergeant who didn’t wanted to be identified.
The landing attracted dozens of curious onlookers, surprised to see the aircraft landing in a farming field.
One of the crew - Tim Corry, 29 said: "We were never really scared or anything, we knew that there was a problem with the aircraft and when we saw the field we decided we should land here."
Taharka added: "For someone who has had over 10 published pieces in the last year, finding a story in Wales really made my holiday.
"It is just amazing how you can run into a story and I am realising that I can become the famous journalist I really want to be."
