MONTGOMERYSHIRE’S new Assembly Member has been given a post in the Conservative’s shadow cabinet.

Russell George AM has been appointed as the Shadow Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development – a fitting role given the current concern in Powys over windfarm construction and their associated electric infrastructure.

Mr George has already made it clear that he opposes on-shore wind farms and he has been heavily involved in calling for a full review of the Welsh Government’s renewable energy policy.

Mr George said he had been thrilled to be given the post.

He said: “I am delighted to have been given such a wide-ranging portfolio. Having lived and worked in Montgomeryshire all my life, I am outraged with the Welsh Government’s obsession with windfarms and the plans to build hundreds of large wind- farms with the associated infrastructure in our area which are completely out of proportion.

“Successive Welsh Governments have neglected us in Mid Wales and we are not prepared to be ignored.

“The environment, sustainable development and the need for a broader range of renewable energies are important.

“We now need an urgent review of the out-dated policy on how Wales meets its renewable energy targets.

“I want to speak up and support communities across Wales by campaigning for an urgent review and scrutinising and holding the Welsh Government to account for its flawed policy.

“I will work with colleagues throughout the Assembly and with the wider community throughout Montgomeryshire to ensure that the voice of Mid Wales is heard loud and clear.”

Good for you, Russell! You have my full support.

With the Conservatives own pledge to increase electricity from renewable resources by 70 percent he better start thinking quickly about how he's going to contribute to the sustainablility agenda. Opposing all wind farm developments won't help his party meet this target.

plus at the same time, ensuring his own constituents benefit from the growth in the expanding renewable sector. Green jobs, green investment. I wonder will he still hold the post once the new welsh conservative leader is elected. but good luck russell

Opposing wind farm developments has helped Russell get elected, though, with a far better swing than the Tories generally got at the last election. Cameron take note. And "green jobs" are nonsense; experience in Spain has shown that, for the creation of each "green job", 2.7 jobs have been lost in the real economy. Which is why Spain is now slashing the silly subsidies.

Witnessed RG's 1st televised interview last night on BBC Wales 'Dragons eye' It was painful watching him being eaten for breakfast by a candidate from the green party on the wind farm issue. Glyn came across really good. but seeing Russ's NIMBY arguments go up in smoke was awkward.
