Former council leader to take up Assembly seat

WREXHAM Council’s former leader could not bear to listen to a vote which decided he can take up his seat in the Welsh Assembly – so he did some gardening instead.

Aled Roberts, who is still a councillor for Ponciau, won the North Wales regional seat for the Liberal Democrats at May’s election but he was excluded from the chamber after officials discovered that at the time of his election he was still a member of the Valuation Tribunal for Wales, which is not allowed under the rules.

Fellow Assembly members yesterday voted 30-20 in favour of allowing Cllr Roberts to take up the seat he won in the May elections.

Speaking to the Leader after the result, he said: “I was so sick of everything that I didn’t listen to the debate. I was outside trimming the hedges along my driveway.

“Obviously this as a big relief and since the result was announced my phone has gone mad with people giving my their congratulations and support.

“I am just glad the whole thing is now over. It’s now gone on for two months.
“I got to the stage of not even caring which way the vote would go. I just wanted it all to be over.”

The vote yesterday followed the findings of a probe by the Assembly’s Commissioner for Standards, Gerard Elias QC, which says Cllr Roberts “did everything he could have reasonably been expected to do in ensuring that he was not a disqualified person for the purpose of nomination or election to the National Assembly”.

“I’ve now got a lot of catching up to do,” said Cllr Roberts.

“When all this began I had just started my case work as an AM and that had to be left in abeyance.

“I am delighted North Wales will now have its full representation in the Assembly.”
Cllr Roberts added he would now be in touch with his colleagues to start addressing issues affecting North Wales.

A spokesman for the Welsh Liberal Democrats said: “We are very pleased.
“It was not fair that because of misleading information given to him by the Electoral Commission he was unable to take his seat.”

Is he a part time AM or a part time Cllr given that he holds both posts...would he have to abstain if an issue directly affecting Wrexham was put to the vote at the Assembly...certainly his holding both seats proves that Cllrs are part time reps as he can't be in Cardiff and Wrexham at the same time

Congratulations Aled! You deserve your seat in the Assembly. Very well done, indeed sir. Bendigedig!!

Ieuan, what has happened is an overt and public act of sheer corruption, proving once and for all what a tin pot institution the assembly is,and how badly Welsh people are represented. He should have lost his seat..period..any other claim should have been dealt with in a proper legal setting either on a criminal or civil basis. This is certainly a bad day for the vestiges of democracy this country has left.

When Aled Roberts was Leader of the Council, he visited my wife over a complaint of maladministration in connection with Social Services which had led to our loss of home and our present housing conditions. He informed her that he had no jurisdiction as Leader of the Council. My wife told him that this could become a case of litigation. He answered "I know what litigation is" and very haughtily said " It'll take you years to get it to court". .

The Electoral Commission has said statistics suggest nobody visited a Welsh language website site which was blamed for an AM's disqualification. Mr Roberts says that he did.

  11. Posted by: Got A Life at 13:12 on 07 July 2011 Report

ac - why don't you ask John Marek and Sandy Mewies about how they managed both positions. John was MP and AM for a while and Sandy was AM and local cllr. Obviously it's not an issue given today's technology.

No, Nomad, Gypsies and travellers are a disgrace. If you don't like it, then return to Ireland (where I'm sure you came from) and do all of us a favour.

My fellow commentator dave068, Wrexham social services have a history of "serious maladministration". On 17th June 2011, I filed Criminal Charges with Chief Constable Mark Polin. In addition, I have ongoing civil proceedings against Wrexham Social Services. I have discovered wickedness beyond comprehension. The public expects the Child Care System to be fair and descent, but above all just. What I witnessed was so wantonly unjust it cries out for a Public Statement.

  18. Posted by: nomad at 19:13 on 07 July 2011 Report

people have got short memories, this is how they were thinking in nazi germany,i loved my grandad and every thing he stood for,u do you have anything to be proud of big man

some good comments from nomad , strange how some people disappear when confronted by certain aspects of history , the same thing happens when facts relating to the Polish during The Battle Of Britain are brought up.

  21. Posted by: InMyOpinion at 20:07 on 07 July 2011 Report

Ahhhh the troubles with Wrexham social services, There's little Aled could do really, he capped there budget by £5 million every year, the problem is social service managers with little or no field experience, blame eveyone else other than themselves when they allow ( some) social workers to bully anyone they feel like.

  22. Posted by: truth hurts at 20:31 on 07 July 2011 Report

Strange, he allegedly visited the Welsh version of the website for advice, but filled in an English language nomination form

  23. Posted by: adie100965 at 20:37 on 07 July 2011 Report

My fellow commentator, InMyOpinion, I give you my word of honour, I will see to it personally Justice is served by the right Social Worker. On the evidence I have seen, Wrexham Social Services have established themselves the bull work of iniquity within the Child Care System.

  24. Posted by: InMyOpinion at 21:06 on 07 July 2011 Report

adie100965, I sincerely wish you luck.

Strong smell of compo hopefuls in the air.

lib, nomad may not be the most educated amongst us but he's got his head screwed on, and as I have stated on here before just because your a traveller does not mean you are thick... keep it up nomad.

  27. Posted by: InMyOpinion at 21:23 on 07 July 2011 Report

.Commpo? I think its more to do with publicizing something that was wittnessed, the more the merrier, the sooner its taken into administration the better for all conserned especially the good social workers.

hey folks, I know this is off subject but I just heard Steph Booths group of companies have gone bust.... seems she was all mouth after all ?

  30. Posted by: liberty1 at 22:02 on 07 July 2011 Report

IMO , old news , on BBC news web at teatime.

  31. Posted by: liberty1 at 22:05 on 07 July 2011 Report

IMO, instead of gloating over this persons position you should remember the large number of people who may lose their jobs.

  32. Posted by: InMyOpinion at 22:14 on 07 July 2011 Report

lib, I was not gloating, just looking back at promisses that would now be broken, but yes its a sad day because I know she employed quite a few here and there. still we can all blame Thatcher for it eh?

  33. Posted by: a cahill at 22:54 on 07 July 2011 Report

adie 100965...filing charges against Social Services or teachers usually brings a couple of Coppers around to your home to warn you off as it did in my case...the protection of children is the last thing on the minds of police, teachers or social services... documentation is available to prove malpractice if you need it

  34. Posted by: liberty1 at 23:48 on 07 July 2011 Report

IMO , how can we blame Thatcher? please explain.

  35. Posted by: hangmansknotinn at 23:53 on 07 July 2011 Report

Well I'd happily meet you in my local, not in some naff industrial estate where you'd probably have about 100 of your cronies waiting to back you up...

  36. Posted by: liberty1 at 23:55 on 07 July 2011 Report

ac " filng charges " ? been watching to much US telly progs? Maybe you should elaborate more about your accusations for them to be taken seriously.

  37. Posted by: hangmansknotinn at 00:00 on 08 July 2011 Report

And Nomad, didn't the article above this say that the council has just agreed a travellers site??!

  38. Posted by: a cahill at 00:09 on 08 July 2011 Report

Technology of today....seems that Aled or the Electoral Commission haven't got a handle on that new found gizmo at the moment

  39. Posted by: a cahill at 00:20 on 08 July 2011 Report

Libby...you old oracle aren't we lucky to have such an informed person in our midst....please inform me.. to which appropiate authority within the Local Authority should a head teacher report a case of alledged assault on a child against a teacher ?...all the time I was thinking it should be the statutory body known as the I.S.A.

  40. Posted by: InMyOpinion at 03:27 on 08 July 2011 Report

lib, well arn't you always blaming Maggie or the cons of causing all the crap of today ? just seems apt for you old chap.

  41. Posted by: InMyOpinion at 03:34 on 08 July 2011 Report

But at the end of the day Aled got through, wether or not it was right or wrong is beside the point... he just has to proove himself in the senedd, and that we will have to wait and see if he's worth his salt or is yet another waste of public funds. something tells me and others we have a few surprises in store.

  42. Posted by: kevinweston at 08:18 on 08 July 2011 Report

Public funds..... our money........already wasted. How much did this cost?

  43. Posted by: nomad at 09:26 on 08 July 2011 Report

hangman we are supposed to be the ones who are not educated, council refused permiistion, them people appealed away from local council and won case .have you got a job bum . lison i dont go in to pubs i dont drink but if you want to meet me am camped near the old cockle factory next to green fields

  45. Posted by: a cahill at 09:45 on 08 July 2011 Report

Is it ignorance or pure stupidity that leads people to believe that all Gypsy families originate in Ireland...the amount of times I have been asked whether I'm a Gypsy never ceases to amaze me...in one coversation I was asked if I was just Irish or Gypsy Irish

  46. Posted by: Whatson at 11:16 on 08 July 2011 Report

ac, my guess is just plain stupidity and to only have the capacity for two silly choices at a time in their less than 'spacious' heads

  47. Posted by: welshchik at 12:09 on 08 July 2011 Report

people assume you are a gypsy if you have an Irish accent why i dont know, theres Welsh,English travellers but nothing is ever said about them so why assume Irish travellers are trouble, theres good and bad in every race so leave the Irish alone for once.

  48. Posted by: hangmansknotinn at 14:25 on 08 July 2011 Report

Okay, well what did you have in mind? I need to dress appropriately...

  49. Posted by: adie100965 at 19:38 on 08 July 2011 Report

To a cahill, thank you for your words of advice. Dr Martin Luther King said "Injustice anywhere is a threat to Justice everywhere". If I do have a visit from the Police, and they threaten me, I will take on the Police. This is all new to me, so I welcome all the help I can get, thank you.

  50. Posted by: liberty1 at 22:18 on 08 July 2011 Report

IMO , so you are starting to see the light , well done.

  51. Posted by: liberty1 at 22:36 on 08 July 2011 Report

ac , thankyou for the plaudit , it is deserved , I,S,A? I take it you refer to the Indepen Safeguard Auth? if so the Head would report an alleged assault to the LEA who , as the teachers employer , should refer it on to the ISA , the head is not the employer the Loc Auth is.

  52. Posted by: a cahill at 10:08 on 09 July 2011 Report

adie100965...a further threat to justice is peoples fear of authority and being branded an upstart or as has already happened accusations against your motives (compo)...lying down and rolling over is an easier option but as always you will have to live with a sense that you failed not the only children but yourself

  53. Posted by: a cahill at 10:24 on 09 July 2011 Report

libby...question was.. who are the relevant Authorities within the Local Authority...in reporting to the LEA he would have pre-empted any further complaint to the LEA through the statutory procedure as set down in law...furthermore the Board of Govs are teachers employers.. not as you mistakenly suggest...the LEA

  54. Posted by: liberty1 at 19:40 on 11 July 2011 Report

ac , I have answered the question you have asked , as for who employs who the LEA pays the salaries of the teaching staff plus NI Conts etc so therefore they are the employers , unless you know better.

  55. Posted by: adie100965 at 19:56 on 11 July 2011 Report

To a Cahill, again, thank you for your advice, you mean well. I am not interested in "Compensatiom", any compo I will use for the greater good. I am tenacious, and have the services of a excellant solicitor. I seek only truth and justice
