Collapse ends hope of revival

PRESTATYN skipper Dave Harris will be looking for more steel from his batsmen when the beleagured bottom-of-the-table seasiders take on Wallasey at Beach Close on Saturday.

Harris was bitterly disappointed at the collapse that saw Prestatyn throw away the chance of a draw at Southport & Birkdale last Saturday, leaving South African pro Warren Groeneweld with a mission impossible.

Batting first Southport took over 60 overs to post 238 for 6 declared as Mark Fletcher fended off the Prestatyn attack as he amassed 101, Gareth Friday pocketing 2 for 43 off 15 overs.

Prestatyn's hopes again rested on prolific Harris following his superb 111 at Liverpool the previous week but when he fell for 2, the writing was on the wall.
Gareth Boughey remained long enough to add a valuable 41 but the key knock belonged to prolific Groeneweld with a mastelry 90.

Taking the score to a challenging 163 for 6, Groenweld was hoping the seasiders could press hard for a win or at least salvage a spirited draw. Neither proved realistic as the last four wickets crumbled without a single run being added to the total despite 13 overs still being available for Prestatyn to mount a charge. In just over 45 overs it was all up for Prestatyn as they slid to a lop-sided 23-5 points split.

In contrast Prestatyn Seconds were celebrating a well-earned victory in their home tussle with Moorfields.

Andy Taylor led the way with 66 as Prestatyn reached 177 for seven. Support came from Joe Horton (25) and Max Jones (23 not out).

Scott Williams (five for 36) soon started to make inroads in to the Moorfields batting and Horton picked up two for 36 as the visitors were bowled out for 157.
