A PLAN to defend against flooding is may soon be put into action.

On Thursday, members of Conwy Council will scrutinise the new coastal flood risk planning protocol, which aims to protect Pensarn, Kinmel Bay and part of Abergele.

If the protocol is approved, it will affect planning applications in the affected areas and will help set coastline management policy for the next 100 years.

This will include limiting new developments in flood-risk areas and ensuring new buildings would be designed to withstand floods.

John Pitt, Abergele town and county councillor, said the document was vitally important to the region.

He said: “I’m glad people are taking a great deal of notice of this.  When you’re talking about 100 year floods, that could still be next year, not in 100 years time. We want to be prepared and think into the future.

“People have pooh-poohed it saying we never have floods in Abergele, but it’s not never, and if it does happen we want to be ready. It’s money well spent.”
