Saunders - Praised by Thomas

UNBELIEVABLE was the word I used to describe Wrexham supporters in their show of faith, hope and charity before the start of the season.

And the adjectives keep on coming because what Dean Saunders and his players have achieved on the pitch during the first month is incredible.

Six wins on the trot - it would have been seven but for that late goal by Cambridge - is a magnificent response in what have been trying times at my beloved Racecourse.

Many managers would have walked out on the club after what Dean has had to go through but he’s stuck at it and he deserves a lot of credit for this sensational start.

For the amount of work and hours he puts in behind the scenes, Dean deserves all the accolades and it was good to see him pick up the manager of the month award for August.

His CV is getting better by the day and I’m sure it won’t be long before other clubs start looking at him.

But you’ve got to give the players a lot of praise too.

Considering they weren’t getting their wages on time in the build-up to the season, the players have responded brilliantly and I’ve been impressed with the way they’ve been playing.

I watched the Tamworth game and you couldn’t fault them. It should have been a lot more than 3-0.

Jay Harris has always impressed me but Lee Fowler is the man pulling the strings in the middle of the park and his form will be key this season.

The important thing now is that they keep the run going. Confidence is a key factor in football. If you’re playing with confidence, you try things and don’t worry if they don’t work out.

Wrexham need to keep that self-belief and I’m really excited about what they can achieve this season.

Another contributory factor to Wrexham’s success is that they haven’t been forced to call off any games because of international call-ups.

In year’s gone by, they’ve been playing catch up. This season they haven’t and have got 19 points out of a possible 21 in the bag. Just keep the good run going at Barrow, that is all I can to the lads!

At the other end of the footballing spectrum, it’s been a great start to the Premier League season and as a United fan, I’ve been really impressed with the start new boys, Phil Jones and Ashley Young have made.

They’ve been good additions and if Rooney continues to remain on fire then I’m very confident of another good season.

City have started well but I dislike the way that they are trying to win the title.

It’s not a level playing field in the Premier League because no-one can compete with the money they are throwing around.

I think Liverpool, who have spent well in the summer, will challenge. Chelsea will too but I’m not so sure about Arsenal. I don’t think they’ve got the strength in depth.

I don’t know if Theo Walcott has written words to that effect in his autobiography - although what a joke that is!

For someone who is just out of short trousers to write his own book is ridiculous. I mean what’s he got to write about?

He’s only been in the game two minutes!

Would I want to read what Theo Walcott’s done in football? No. And would I want to but his book? It’s a big no to that too!

I BET Robbie Earnshaw is still having nightmares after THAT miss!

He’s normally so reliable from that range but these things happen in football and at least he had the guts to come out and face the music after the game.

A draw would have been a fair result because Wales took the game to England after the break.

Earnshaw’s miss will make all the headlines but I thought it was another encouraging performance from Wales.

I know the one good result against Montenegro doesn’t mean that we’ve totally turned the corner. But add Tuesday night’s display and at least it gives the fans hope - and as a football fan, that’s all you want!

Speed wouldn’t have had to say too much to his players in terms of motivation in the Wembley dressing room.

“You’re playing England!” just about does it. You don’t have to be Welsh or Scottish to want to beat England. Everyone in the world wants to beat England. It’s a simple fact.

England’s main problem is that they won the World Cup in 66. They think they can win every time but they’re just not goo enough.

I remember beating England 4-1 at The Racecourse - and I scored in the game.

It was Mike England’s first game at Wales manager and his reaction after the game was priceless when he said: “I wasn’t expecting that!”

It’s been a dreadful start for David Moyes’ and I hope that the Everton faithful don’t turn against him and the players.

To sell your best player in Mikel Arteta on deadline day must have been hard to take but Everton have got to battle through and let’s face it, Everton can’t go out and try and buy a title like Manchester City are trying to do.

They are living in the real world and if they have to sell to survive, then so be it.

It think it would totally distasteful for fans to have a go at the players and if there’s anyone who can guide the team through this storm then its Moyes.

He is a superb manager and his reputation is growing all the time. So much so that he’s been tipped as the man to replace Sir Alex Ferguson when the Manchester United legend eventually decides to call it a day in the Old Trafford hotseat.

I had the briefest of brief spells at Goodison after leaving United in the early Eighties.

I think I played 13 games in all and the reason I left is probably my own fault.

I was coming back from injury and Howard Kendall, who was the Everton boss at the time, asked me to play in the reserves.

My reaction was to say I don’t play reserve team football, I want to go straight back into the first team.

I didn’t last long after that and signed for Brighton although at the time I thought they’d said New Brighton because I didn’t fancy moving that far from home.

Brighton are doing really well under Gus Poyet and although it was another short spell down on the south coast, I obviously made an impression.

I remember reading a piece by Des Lynam - the old Match of The Day anchorman and big Brighton fan.

He’d got me in his all time favourite Brighton XI and I’d only played 20 games and scored one goal for them!
