A SPONSORED walk to raise money for a fund set up in the name of cancer patient from Llandrillo will be held this weekend.
The walk is being held to raise money for Nia’s Journey.
Nia Hughes, from Llandrillo, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 28 last year is raising awareness of cancer in young people and at the same time is hoping to raise money for Breast Cancer Care Wales, the cancer Unit at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, and genetical cancer.
The walk of around four miles will start from Cywain Centre in Bala at 1pm on Saturday (September 17) around Llwyn Ci to Llanfor and back to Cywain.
Last December Nia, mother of Sam, nine, was diagnosed with the devastating news that she had breast cancer.
When she started suffering from pain in her right breast last year, that felt as if she had pulled a muscle, she never imagined that she was suffering from cancer.
“I wasn’t very breast aware, I don’t think people in their twenties imagine themselves being at risk, but today I know how really important it is,” said Nia who is full of praise to the cancer unit at Bodelwyddan.
“I didn’t even think about cancer until I started to feel a lump, a lump that appeared over night. I went to the doctors and was referred to Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan for further tests, and following a biopsy was given the devastating news the following week.”
The news was a shock, but Nia had to carry on as normal and started on her chemotherapy treatment a few days before Christmas.
Nia is now resting following a double masectomy last month, but is looking forward to the walk on Saturday.
Over the past few months Nia has been involved in many events to raise money for Nia’s Journey - a coffee morning at the Dudley in Llandrillo that raised £1,800, a sponsored walk when Graham Lowe and another 17 walked up Snowdon and raised £1,700.
“Its inspiring to see people ready to help and ready to donate,” added Nia.
Walkers can pay £10 to take part or can contact Lowri on 01678540528 to have sponsor forms.
