COUNTY Councillor Richard White has defected from the Liberal Democrat party to the Welsh Conservatives.

Cllr White, who represents the Newtown East ward, says he has joined the Tory party because he feels “let down” by the Lib Dems.

His decision to switch parties means Cllr Francesca Jump is the only Lib Dem county councillor in Montgomeryshire.

“My decision to join the Welsh Conservatives was taken after a long period of reflection,” explained Cllr White.

“I believe that their priorities are more in tune with the future needs of Powys.

“I would like to assure the people of my Newtown East ward that I will continue to serve their needs on both personal and Newtown related matters. Becoming part of the Welsh Conservative team, including Glyn Davies MP and Russell George AM, will provide a stronger voice for Newtown on Powys County Council.”

Cllr White also emphasised his dismay at the council’s spending record.

“I found it very disappointing that Powys County Council last year spent more than £6 million on consultants – that’s more than it spends on sixth forms. It is clear to me that the council cabinet needs to re-assess its priorities.”

Commenting on the surprise decision by Cllr White, Aled Davies, Leader of the Welsh Conservative Group, said that he was “delighted”.

“Cllr White is an excellent councillor who works hard for his ward. I am delighted to be able to welcome him into a strong team of Conservative Councillors.

“His decision represents a shift in opinion and I think people are starting to realise that the Lib Dem and Powys Independent cabinet just isn’t working.

“The Welsh Conservatives have made a strong stand on important local issues. We are opposed to the current windfarm, hub and pylon plans in Montgomeryshire.

“We believe that communities deserve a say in the future of schools in their area.

We know that local people want to see their money spent wisely, and we want the council to spend more responsibly.”

Montgomeryshire Conservative Association Chairman Ian Harrison added his congratulations to Cllr White.

“I’m happy to welcome such an able Councillor to our growing team,” he said.

“Cllr White is a valuable addition to our successful Conservative Councillors group and I am looking forward to working with him in the future.”
