WALES First Minister Carwyn Jones has opened a new £9.9m independent living centre.
Mr Jones was at the Nant Y Mor facility in Prestatyn where chatted with elderly residents.
Mr Jones said: “This is a fantastic facility. It helps people maintain their independence while having help here and there, while providing company for people as well.
“The residents seem to enjoy the place very ymuch, and took great pains to tell me that.”
The First Minister’s tour of the complex, which consists of 27 one-bed and 32 two-bed self-contained apartments, included a visit to one of Nant y Mor’s first residents.
Pam Barrow, 79, said: “Before moving to Nant y Mor I lived alone in a bungalow.
Now I can join in various things going on here when I want, still being able to come back to my apartment, close my own door and do what I want to do when I want to do it.”
“I love my apartment. I have a lung complaint and it is wonderful for me to be able to enjoy the fresh air and views from my windows and my balcony of the mountains as well as the gardens at Nant y Mor.”
Nant Y Mor, developed by Wales and West Housing Association in partnership with Denbighshire County Council, includes a hair salon, roof gardens, a library and self-service restaurant.
Ann Jones, AM for the Vale of Clwyd, said: “Age affects us all in different ways and we need a mix of support that puts choice and control in the hands of people directly. Whether you attend a day care centre for a few hours a day while living with family or take up and apartment here with a care package you deserve to be supported.”
