A BANGOR girl who suffers from undiagnosed neurological problems and who lost a leg in a brave struggle against cancer will spend another Christmas in hospital after plans to provide home care fell through.

Nakita Roberts, 16, has spnt four years at Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool after having her leg amputated at the hip to remove a tumour, and is ready to come home.

Her father Darren, 37, met with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) on Monday, but he said that dicsussions had not moved forward.

“It was absolutely devastating. It was just so disappointing for the whole family, and most of all for Nakita,” he said.

Nakita was taken to Alder Hey in April 2008 after she broke her leg while at Ysbyty Gwynedd.

She had breathing difficulties, was given a tracheostomy, and was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her femur five months later.

Darren added that a proposal had been made to move Nakita to Ysbyty Gwynedd, but added that it would mean that she would only be able to come home during the day.

“It feels so frustrating, because Nakita has battled through the most horrendous illnesses, so she has done her part,” he said.

“Alder Hey have been fantastic, so it just such a shame that, at the moment, the thing that’s stopping us from going forward is that there’s no care package in place.”

The family has adapted their house so that Nakita can be cared for at home.
Nakita’s grandmother Carol Jones is planning fundraising events on ANglesey next year to congtribute to Nakita’s care.

“Nakita’s been extremely brave. She’s a little fighter,” Carol said.

“She can’t talk or sit up properly, except for in her wheelchair, she has to be fed through her tummy and is still on an IV, but she still raises a smile.”

A spokesperson for the BCUHB said: "Due to patient confidentiality, we are unable to comment on individual patients.

“However, we are committed to working closely with Alder Hey Hospital and others to ensure that safe systems of care are in place to appropriately meet Nakita's complex needs in a safe and timely manner."
