COMMUNITY is demanding urgent safety measures on a road where a girl of 11 was knocked down.
The girl from Penley was involved in the collision on Abenbury Road, Whitegate, as she waited for the school bus last week.
Now residents are calling for improved safety measures on the road and a petition is being kept in the Abbey Premier store just down the road from where the accident happened.
Another child, a boy of four, was seriously injured after being hit by a car outside the store in May 2009.
Amanda Hughes, who works at the store, said: “As soon as it was put up there were people signing it and we had two sheets filled within a couple of hours. Other copies are being taken around the estate.”
There are now more than 100 signatures on the paper copy, and around 50 more on an internet version at www.ipetitions.com/
petition/abenburyroad.
Tracy Jones who signed the e-petition said: “I saw this little girl right after the accident. It was horrifying to see her like that.
“Please let’s all sign this petition to stop this from happening again.”
Stephen Jones, said: “There are many places around Caia Park which need to be more pedestrian friendly, more off-road car parking is required.”
A schoolfriend of the girl who saw the accident contacted the Leader to echo the petition’s sentiments:
She said: “The speed of the road isn’t a problem.
“It’s the fact that there is nowhere for you to cross the road safely.
“On our way back home from school we have to cross that road.
“Just build a zebra crossing and this would never have happened.”
The injured girl has not been named and is suffering from head injuries which a Wrexham Maelor Hospital spokesman said were “not life threatening”.
The girl has now been transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for observation.
The petition was started by Whitegate county councillor Marc Jones and Queensway councillor Carrie Harper.
Cllr Jones collected the petition last Friday ahead of a site visit by the chief highways engineer this afternoon.
He said: “The petition has really taken off and got a life of its own.
“At the moment the feeling is there should be a pedestrian crossing but we should look at other ideas.”
He said he understood the girl was now out of intensive care but said there were 20 traumatised children who caught the bus to Maelor School, Penley on that day after seeing the accident.
