Anger as Flintshire hospital service closes

A VITAL hospital service is set to close in the New year.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board plans to temporarily close the minor injuries unit at Flint Community Hospital and divert staff to Holywell Hospital where a further six beds will be opened.

The closure is expected to be temporary in a bid to release staff at Flint to help the service cope with the busy winter period.

Flint councillor Alex Aldridge says he is very concerned about the plan.

He said: “I’m disappointed Betsi Cadwaladr has had to resort to an action which results in the closure of the minor injuries unit here in Flint.

“Obviously it’s not isolated and they are trying to reconcile issues on the provision of health right across North Wales, but it will still come as a sense of concern.

“To that end we will be seeking urgent talks with our AM Sandy Mewies to ask her to contact the minister responsible for health – Wrexham AM Lesley Griffiths – to ensure this is only a temporary action because of staff shortages over the critical period and Flint will once again see a full return of the minor injuries unit.”

Flint Castle councillor Ian Roberts said he was bitterly disappointed. “When the closure occurred in June we were given assurances by Betsi Cadwaladr there would be a consultation and people would be informed if any further closures were to happen,” he said.

“I believe the closure is to do with numbers, but when a service becomes intermittent it’s no wonder people stop using it.

“We need Sandy Mewies to make urgent representations to the health minister on behalf of Flint Community Hospital."

A spokesman for Betsi Cadwaldr University Health Board said details about the changes would be released today.

Underfunding of the NHS beginning to make its mark...Labour doing what it does best...£3.6bn going to support tuition fees for students a majority of whom will not make a contribution to Wales because they will be forced to find work outside of the Principality....taking much needed funds from vital services such as early years education NHS and infrastrucure...a vote winner that will cost Wales now and for the future

The hospital at Flint will close its a matter of time. The local councillors would be better entering into discussion about the future not trying to cling onto the past. That is how they can best serve the population they serve.

Conhill, So what contribution have you made to Wales? All you have ever done is create a lot of hot air and take take take, I would rather fund education and hope that the person leads a better life somewhere on this earth than pay for you.

This health authority is in need of urgent treatment. There is no major flu outbreak but staff are ill.....stress.... They do not know where they are working next week. They are short of staff because they are not attracting folk into Wales

ljbby...top down in all respects...whats the point in spending £900ma year on Uni students if the lack of funding at primary and secondary levels prevents pupils from reaching their potential....NHS...administrators and managers 10 a penny frontline staff left with burden of running a service that is underfunded.and is clearly not able

libby... unlike you we tell our friends from America and other foreign parts to take out travel insurance...rather than allowing them to to make demands on an already over burdened service...as for a better life on earth What part will that be ? Canada, Australia, New Zealand ?... should be interesting to see if student loans repayment are enforceable in other Countries

Conhill, if the primary/secondary are as bad as you make out then why are so many going on to Uni? As for the NHS, I think you will find it was your Margaret who introduced the present manag/admin setup.

There are serious problems with health management in North Wales and we should be alert to what is happening. There is a need for GP's in the Wrexham area to fight the corner of their patients.
