A DOUBLE Welsh Champion athlete is getting ready to take part in next year’s Olympic torch relay.

Ysgol Glan Clwyd pupil Matthew Reece, 17, has been offered a provisional place as one of the 8,000 inspirational people who will carry the flame this summer.

Matthew, from Rhyl, was nominated by both his parents Sharon and Ken and his school tutors after excelling in his studies and as a champion field athlete, picking up gold medals over the summer in the hammer and discus at the Under 17 Welsh Athletics Track and Field Championship.

“I’m really exited, I can’t wait,” said the Colwyn Bay Athletics Club athlete. I applied for a lot of tickets but didn’t get through, but now I’ve got this which has got me excited again!”

The torch is set to travel through Rhyl and Rhuddlan in July as it passes along the North Wales coast on it’s tour across the UK.

Matthew’s mother Sharon said she was delighted with her son’s success.
“It’s great, we’re really proud of him,” she said.
