CORWEN 1
OVERTON 1
ELFYN Roberts’ Corwen have made their point to begin 2012 in decent fashion.
Corwen’s first match of the year went ahead after the War Memorial Park ground passed a 10am pitch inspection.
Heavy rain had put the match in doubt.
The fact that the game went ahead was good news for Roberts’ team, who were keen to return to winning ways after losing in their last three outings.
The two sides had already met once this season, when a Tom Hughes goal was enough to give Corwen a 1-0 win at Overton in the first round of the Wrexham Area League Premier Division Cup.
Fast forward to the league meeting and Corwen started brightly.
They took the lead in the 18th minute when Nathan Davies hit a first time shot on the turn, which curled out of the reach of keeper Craig Worthington and it went in off the post.
Soon after, Wil Roberts had a chance to give his side a two-goal cushion from a 25-yard free kick.
He managed to get his shot over the wall and it appeared to be heading in, but Worthington managed to get a hand to the ball to divert it wide.
The visitors had a good chance to equalise in the closing stages of the half, following a couple of shots in quick succession, but the danger was cut out when keeper Nathan Aldridge pounced on an Alan Huxley effort.
Overton did go into the break on level terms as they struck right on the stroke of half-time.
Aldridge punched the ball clear of his goal, but he was unlucky to see it go straight to Phil Huxley, who volleyed the ball home.
In the second half, Corwen put a fair amount of pressure on the Overton defence in an attempt to reclaim the lead and they had a number of chances.
The closest they went to scoring was when substitute Andrew Roberts had an overhead kick cleared off the line.
Despite their best efforts, Corwen were unable to find a second goal and they were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
