A NORTH Wales couple celebrated their diamond wedding with 50 members of their talented family.

Jack and Dorothy McMahon of Rhuddlan celebrated their 60th anniversary in style at the Castle Inn at the start of the month, with relatives flying in from Jack’s native Ireland.

Jack McMahon said: “We had loads come over, I had six sisters so there were a lot relatives and all of Dorothy’s family.”

Dorothy said: “It was a lovely day.”

Dorothy, who moved to North Wales when her family left Lancashire during the Second World War, left school to co-run run the family-owned newsagents on Grange Road in Rhyl with her brother after the death of her father.

She met Jack aged 18 in the Queen’s Dance Hall in Rhyl in 1948 after Jack moved to the local military camp from Ireland.

They married four years later and Jack worked at Johnson British woodcraft in Kinmel Bay, however the couple still cross the Irish Sea every year to return to Jack’s home town.

The McMahons now have three grandsons, two of who are making waves in the entertainment industry.

Dorothy said: “We have Alex Cardno, who visits us every day. My grandson Joe, who is on TV. He was a student in Liverpool, when someone from Desperate Scousewives asked if they could get some students into a club, and he was chosen. It’s not my cup of tea, but we watch it for Joe.

“My other grandson, Micheal worked on the King’s Speech. He’s in production in London, but he’s branched off on his own. He did a short film called Hawk.”

Dorothy and Jack are both keen golfers, Jack once holding the title of President at Rhuddlan Golf Club, and they once arranged for more than 30 players to come over to North Wales on an exchange.

When asked what was the secret to a happy marriage Jack said: “I don’t really know, I don’t really think that there is one but we have both played golf together.”
