BALA 6
NANT CONWY 41
A FAR from magnificent seven marked the weekend for Bala versus old foes Nant Conwy.
The title-chasing visitors crossed for a total of seven tries to scorch to their 12th victory of the campaign - and keep up the pressure on SWALEC League Division One (North) leaders Caernarfon.
It was by no means all one way traffic, as Bala briefly took the lead in the first half, but they failed to find a way on to the scoreboard in the second period as Nant claimed a maximum five points.
Windy and rainy conditions made things tricky for both teams and it was Nant Conwy who claimed the lead after nine minutes of play.
Lock Sion Jones crossed the whitewash after a period of pressure on the home line.
Carwyn ap Myrddin’s conversion attempt went wide of the post in the wind.
Bala’s response was a strong one and they managed to turn things around to claim the lead.
Outside half Owain Aled reduced the gap when he kicked a penalty after a quarter-of-an-hour and Aled was on target again with a second penalty to hand the home side the lead 10 minutes later.
Nant ended the first half on top, though, grabbing two tries in the space of five minutes to build up a healthy 17-6 interval advantage.
Flanker Eryl Jones regained the lead when he crossed for Nant Conwy’s second try and the third score wasn’t too long in coming with fly half Owain Jones touching down.
Carwyn ap Myrddin successfully added the extras and the visitors secured their try bonus point just two minutes into the second half when prop James Jones claimed his side’s fourth try.
Left winger Andre Channer-Hughes joined the try-scoring party with the away side’s next score with 20 minutes left to play.
Things then turned into the Carwyn ap Myrddin show, as he bagged two tries and a couple of conversions in the closing quarter-of-an-hour, to take his personal haul for the afternoon up to 16 points.
