A ROAD safety campaigner has welcomed the “pleasant surprise” of an early finish to a new pedestrian crossing.

Lyndsay French, of Rhos on Sea, campaigned for eight years to have a crossing installed on the crossroads of Church Road and Penrhyn Avenue to slow down motorists and allow children to cross safely.

With work on the crossing by Conwy Council’s Highway Department completed within the fortnight, Ms French was left with a “buzz” after seeing the crossing in place.

She said: “It is a pleasant surprise - I came home from the school last night, and I stood on the corner starting at it. I thought ‘This is not real!’.

She added that the crossing was already having an impact on motorists.

“It’s good to see people using it - when I was coming down off Church Road, I could see traffic slowing down. And people are saying they’re glad it’s there.”
