THE First Minister has been urged to watch a YouTube video that highlights shop closures and shows Newtown as a ghost town

The video, posted on YouTube by a resident using the name CutPryce, has recieved a huge amount of hits this week and on Tuesday was mentioned to First Minister Carwyn Jones by Montgomeryshire AM Russell George.

The video has images of Newtown past and present, including shops boarded up or closed, and set to The Specials track 'Ghost Town'.

AM George said: “I am obviously grateful to the Business Minister for examining the potential development of Business Growth Zones in Mid Wales but the Government needs to get on with it because towns like Newtown are rapidly turning into ghost towns.

“The fact is that there are a number of businesses closing their doors on a weekly basis and the video posted by one local resident has really put the economy of the town into perspective.

“I recommended that the First Minister look at the YouTube video because it clearly demonstrates the need for urgent action to stop the town’s decline.”
