A CHRISTIAN group has launched a campaign against the North Wales Mardi Gras.
Christian Voice distributed leaflets through letter boxes and in the High Street in protest against the event, which is scheduled for Beaumaris Leisure Centre on Saturday, April 28.
Spokesman Charles Mortlock said that the group was not anti-gay people, but was against promoting homosexuality.
He said: “We know that there are worse things going on in society, but we don’t think they should be celebrated.
“We don’t believe that this lifestyle should be promoted in a public space.
Event organiser Alan Jones explained that there would not be a parade through the town, and added that it was not specifically a gay, lesbian and transgender event.
He added: “The Mardi Gras is open for everybody in the community to attend, irrespective of religion, race or sexual orientation.
“It is regrettable that Christian Voice are misrepresenting our intentions of building bridges within the community.
Mr Jones added that the group was welcome to attend, provided they behaved “in the appropriate manner.”
Mr Mortlock was also opposed to the Mardi Gras being held at the leisure centre.
An Anglesey County Council spokesperson said: "The Equality Act 2010 is about ensuring a fair deal for everyone and focuses on ending discrimination, advancing equality of opportunity and fostering good relations between different individuals and communities.
“The county council is committed to adhering to these principles."
Entry to the Mardi Gras is £5 on the door.
