TWO Rhyl primary school teachers are vying for votes to be elected to a top Welsh teaching body.
Ben Cox, and Bernadette Thomas, both teachers at Ysgol Emmanuel, are contesting the election to the General Teaching Council for Wales.
Polling takes place by post or on line throughout this month to fill the eight seats on the 25-person council which are reserved for directly-elected teachers.
A further four seats are reserved for directly-elected head-teachers or deputies, while others are nominated by teaching unions or appointed by the Welsh Government.
The GTCW registers more than 38,000 teachers in Wales and is responsible for upholding standards in the profession, promoting professional development and advising Government on issues that affect teaching.
This is the fourth election since the body was established in 2000.
GTCW deputy chief executive, Hayden Llewellyn, returning officer for the election, said: “Self-regulation is now a cornerstone of the teaching profession in Wales, and directly electing teachers to the Council of the regulatory body underpins that principle.”
Ballot papers were posted to the homes of all registered teachers and they have until February 29 to cast their votes with successful candidates being announced on March 9.
