GLAN Clwyd Hospital’s new Accident and Emergency department has been given the green light by Denbighshire County Council.
The authority’s planning committee has given its approval to build the upgraded emergency department at the rear of the hospital.
The proposal will also include provisions for a new operating theatre on the first floor of the new three-storey building, as well as a new ambulance drop-off and parking area.
A spokesperson for the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said work would begin on the new A and E department once work on Ysbyty Glan Clwyd’s theatres had been completed, and expected the Welsh Government to approve the overall redevelopment of the hospital in the coming days.
“The theatres are nearing completion and the Accident and Emergency department is the next stage of the development.
“We expect the approval of the full business plan to come in the next week.”
The A&E department will form a key part of the hospital’s new Emergency Quadrant, which will bring all urgent care facilities together to reduce patient waiting times and travel distances..
The development is also the latest phase in the £110m Glan Clwyd Hospital Redevelopment Project, which will introduce significant upgrades and improvements throughout the hospital as well as removing asbestos and developing fire safety provisions.
