DENBIGH Golf Club’s ladies section held its annual open Valentine’s nine-hole competition late last week, which attracted 84 entries, including a good number of ladies from other golf clubs in the area.

As a result, a total of £134 was donated to St Kentigern Hospice in St Asaph, which is this year’s charity ladies’ captain June Howatson.

Abergele Golf Club member Sian Powell was the overall winner with 19 points.

Meanwhile, David Griffiths claimed victory in week 17 of the gents’ winter league with a very good score of 44 points off his handicap of 15, which has since been reduced to nine.

In all, a total of 19 members had their handicaps adjusted.

The ladies of Ruthin-Pwllglas Golf Club assembled to support and encourage the incoming lady captain as she drove into office. It is a nerve-jangling moment, but in front of all of the members and well wishers Carey Kearns stepped up to the tee and then hit a beautiful drive straight down the middle.

On the frozen surface the ball bounded on a distance of 97.8m and the rest of her game was unerring as her opening shot, as she and Myfi Lewis won the nine-hole pairs competition with 41 points, two clear of Wendy Williams and vice-captain Catherine Parton, with Stella Gill and Pam Evans third, also with 39.

Sian Evans’ estimate was closest to the length of the captain’s drive.
