One airlifted to hospital after train crash

ONE person has been airlifted to hospital after a train and a van collided at a crossing near Machynlleth.

A fire service spokesman confirmed that four engines had been sent to a level crossing in Machynlleth at 12.35pm.

One person was airlifted to hospital following the collision with neck and chest injuries.

 The cause of the crash is currently unknown.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "We are taking this incident extremely seriously and we will be working closely with the British Transport Police and other relevant authorities in the investigation. "

The line re-opened at 3.40pm, following a bus replacement service.

An investigation into the incident is underway and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has also been informed.

British Transport Police said anyone with information about the collision is asked to call 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 286 of 16/02/2012.
