DEFENDING champions Bangor City will look to strengthen their position at the top of the Welsh Premier League this weekend when they visit Bala Town.

City have been in sparkling form recently, and their late victory at Llanelli last weekend opened up a four-point cushion at the top of the Welsh Premier League.

Nev Powell’s side are unbeaten in the league since last November but the City boss remains wary of the threat posed by this weekend’s opponents.

He said: ”They spent a lot of money over the summer and they bought in experienced players.

“They’ll be looking to upset the top four, so we need to roll our sleeves to beat them. It’s going to be tough.”

Powell paid tribute to his side after skipper Jamie Brewerton scored a late winner to claim a valuable three points against their title rivals.

He said:“Not many teams go to Llanelli and come back with a clean sheet, never mind three points.

“It was a massive result for us, and we’re hitting form at the right time. Winning’s a good habit.”

Last weekend’s match was played on a blustery afternoon at Llanelli’s Stebonheath Park, and the Citizens began brightly.

Their quick passing style was exposing their full-time opponents from the beginning, but the visitors struggled to forge a way past Llanelli’s defence.

Les Davies tested Ashley Morris’ goal midway through the first half with a low shot, but it was the hosts who created the first real chance when Jordan Follows squared to Chris Holloway, who brought the best out of Lee Idzi to keep it out.

Manager Andy Legg changed Llanelli’s tactics at the break which brought an improvement from his side but Kyle Wilson displayed City’s consistent threat when he shot narrowly wide.

Soon after, Idzi was called into action again for City with a spectacular save to deny another Holloway effort.

Minutes later, Jamie Brewerton cleared a goal-bound Mark Griffiths header off the line to keep his side in the match.

Bangor’s defence kept the hosts out and it paid dividends in the 91st minute, when a Mark Smyth corner was deflected into Brewerton’s path, and the skipper made no mistake as he buried his far-post finish into the roof of the net, to secure another invaluable three points.
