CAERWYS 4
CONNAH’S Q TIGERS 0

CRACKING Caerwys reached their first cup final for a decade thanks in the main to a decent first half display.

Taking on the Tigers of Connah’s Quay in the semi-finals of the Clwyd League (East) President’s Cup, Caerwys earned their stripes when they went into the break 3-0 to the good.

With many other games called off, the Caerwys pitch was in perfect condition and this suited the home team's slick passing.

They went ahead after only two minutes when right back Shaun Holden found Steve Hughes, who dispossessed the Tigers’ left back and cut in to shoot home from a tight angle.

Connah’s Quay fought back and Rob Marshall did well to save a deflected shot which was on its way in.

Recent signing Gareth Henley, whose pace tormented the visitors throughout, made it 2-0 thanks to good work from livewire Gareth Rush on 20 minutes.

Good passing on both wings then paid off seven minutes before the interval when the play switched to the left and Dai Jones - playing his first full game since breaking a leg last year - took advantage of some poor defensive play and coolly picked his spot from 20 yards.

Faced with an uphill challenge, the Deesiders stepped up their game after the break and had a great chance when Rush was penalised for handball in the box.

However, Rob Marshall pulled off a tremendous save from the ensuing spot kick at a crucial time.

To rub salt into the Tigers’ wound, Gareth Henley score his second on 70 minutes to put the result beyond doubt when he beat the offside trap and ran through to slot home.

Caerwys face Sychdyn or Point of Ayr in the final.
