PLANS for 21 houses in Wales’ newest city have been slammed by St Asaph Council.

The proposal to build 21 homes, a play ground and to create a road access on St Winefride’s School site has been branded as “over development”.

Councillors voted against the plans during December’s St Asaph Community Council meeting because of the extra traffic it would cause.

St Asaph councillor John Horden said: “The proposal is way over developed.

“The applicants said the houses would have no impact on neighbours at an earlier meeting but they have now added four more houses so surely it will have more of an impact.

“I won’t be surprised if it is rejected.”

Residents have until today(December 26), to make representations about the application.

Councillor Elsie Powell, said: “The roads are already extremely busy, they haven’t thought of the extra traffic at all.

“The amount of traffic will increase and roads will have to change.”

The school building was demolished at the beginning of December in preparation for the 21 houses but planning officers will not be considering the application until the new year.

Plans by the applicants, Pure Residential and Commercial Ltd originally included land located on an “extreme flood zone” but the plans have now been changed to develop the houses outside the flood zone.

The development is highlighted on St Asaph’s town plan and is part of Denbighshire’s Local Development Plan (LDP) to build 8,400 new homes in the next 10 years.

County councillor, Bill Cowie, said: “I’d like to say we won’t build extra homes on a site near a flood zone but on the other hand people need houses and we have got rid of an eye sore after three years.

“And we have to think of the next generation.”

A Denbighshire County Council spokeswoman said: “There is no change in the date for representations. The building has been demolished within planning compliance legislation.”
