DENBIGH town wants your plums.
Denbigh Business Group is urging the people of Denbigh to donate their unwanted plums this autumn for its annual Plum Festival in November. The festival, on November 2 in Denbigh town centre, will feature entertainment and the chance to buy plum-based produce from local suppliers.
The event will showcase the versatility of the Denbigh plum and further its bid to be a recognised brand in its own right.
The fruit is the only native plum in Wales and grows naturally around the town and surrounding county.
Mark Young, owner of The Chocolate Shop and new chairman of the Denbigh Business Group, said: “There are quite a few ancient plum trees around Denbighshire we’re asking the community to join and help make the festival happen by donating their spare Denbigh Plum fruit. We have had perfect growing conditions this year, which we hope will lead to a bumper harvest.”
The group is asking anyone living in Denbigh with plum trees in their gardens or on farmland to bring leftover plums to The Secret Garden shop after they have harvested their fruit.
They will then be distributed to jam makers, pate producers and drink distillers to produce tasty plum-based products to be sold at the festival. Profits will go to a Denbigh charity.
Mr Young said: “Please mark your basket or box with your name so we can advise who has donated the plums used in a product.
“Everything that’s made out of the plums will have a label on it saying who donated the fruit used in it as a thank you.Who knows, you might end up with a delicious jar of jam made from plums from your neighbour’s garden.”
Business group secretary Shereen Lunt from Cai Dai said: “We are working towards officially branding Denbigh Plums by DEFRA in the near future, and the festival is part of the ongoing campaign to achieve that.
“Local people and farmers in the county are being encouraged to plant new plum trees to create more plum produce in order for us to make the Denbigh Plum as famous as Champagne or Kendall mint cake for instance,” she said.
