A MARRIED couple from Denbigh have raised over £5,500 for charity through marathon runs and extreme haircuts.
Kevin Jones is running the London Marathon next year and his wife Lisa had 16 inches of her blonde hair shaved off.
Lisa said: “Kev decided a month or so ago to apply for the London marathon. He has done some fundraising before for the 'Make a Wish Foundation' so decided to help another charity and really push himself.
“Which got me thinking, what could I do? I'm not a runner or a climber and wanted to help him raise as much as cash as possible so I suggested the head shave.”
The charitable couple are doing the joint fundraising event for “Children with Cancer”, a charity dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer.
Lisa added: “Our reasons for supporting the charity are many. My husband tragically lost his sister when she was 13 years old, his younger brother when he was 19 and his mother in her early 40s all to cancer.
“The family were diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic disorder called Li-fraumeni syndrome, my husband Kevin also has been tested and is a confirmed carrier of the gene.”
Lisa was amazed by the swiftness and generosity of the donations.
She said: “We put it on the Just Giving page, a three week deadline saying I would shave my head if we raised £1000 by November 30. We raised it in two days!
“After two weeks the money just kept coming, so on the 30th my best friend shaved off my hair in my local salon in front of family and friends. By the next morning we had raised £5,550.”
As well as giving the money to Children with Cancer, the hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, an organisation which makes real hair wigs for children who have lost their hair to cancer.
