A MOTHBALLED ward in Ruthin hospital (pictured) should be re-opened to cope with pressures on Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

That’s the call from North Wales AM Llyr Gruffydd and vice chair of the Ruthin

League of Friends Morfudd Jones, who said the situation in Glan Clwyd was becoming intolerable in terms of lack of spare beds and parking.

Morfudd Jones, of Ruthin, said: “As someone who has been visiting close relatives regularly in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd recently, it’s clear that Glan Clwyd is struggling both in terms of bed capacity and car parking. Parking is atrocious and beds are being blocked by patients who are fit enough to return to community hospitals.

“There is spare capacity in Ruthin because a ward is lying empty. New fire exits have been put in place and I understand the ward could be re-opened by the end of the month, if the will was there.”

Ms Jones said she would be raising this matter at the Denbighshire Betsi Cadwaladr Community Health Council (CHC) meeting yesterday.

Mr Gruffydd said: “This seems like a commonsense answer to a very real problem. If patients and visitors are struggling to find parking space and potentially missing appointments, then we need to find a solution.

“Making use of spare capacity in Ruthin hospital makes sense and I hope Betsi Cadwaladr take up the option. Ruthin hospital has lost its X-Ray, A&E and this ward under the centralisation agenda of the health board. This is an opportunity to bring health services closer to the people and ease congestion at Glan Clwyd.”
