CUSTOMERS have launched a petition to try to keep the Santander branch open in Ruthin.
Santander has written to customers to say that they are closing their agency branches in Ruthin, Colwyn Bay, Abergele, Llanrwst, Pwllheli and Gresford.
These agency branches were opened by the bank three years ago.
Llyr Gruffydd, Plaid Cymru’s Ruthin-based Assembly Member, said: “I’m a Santander customer and was surprised and disappointed that the bank wants to close its local branch here in Ruthin and other agency branches across the North. I would urge them to re-think this proposal as it will result in a reduced service for many customers.
“I have asked Sue Jones, the regional manager for Santander, for an explanation of their decision. If it was a good idea three years ago to commit to rural communities like this, what’s changed?”
Marc Jones, who works in Ruthin, has set up the online petition calling on Santander to re-think its decision. He said: “More and more banks are pulling out of small towns and forcing customers to travel greater distances to bank with them. I can’t get to another Santander branch during working hours so I will look to close my account if this closure goes through.
“Although a lot can be done through cashpoints and online banking, people still need that personal touch to deal with any problems or paying in cheques.
“Santander UK made a £1.1 billion profit in 2013. Its UK boss had a £1.8 million bonus on top of her £2.1m salary. Any savings it makes from closing these local agency branches will be chickenfeed compared to these figures. This cavalier attitude towards its customers stinks.”
