A SHOP that has pick and mixed traditional sweets with the boom in popularity for American candy has opened in the Dee Valley.
Nicky and Gareth Jones have just opened Fizzywiggs on Oak Street in Llangollen, and it is already proving a hit in the town.
Nicky said: “We have over 200 varieties of weigh-out sweets and 25 varieties made in Scotland.
“We also have a sizeable collection of American chocolates and sweets including Moonpies, Twinkies, Baby Ruths and Twizzlers.”
The shop has many types of sugary treats in Victorian inspired jars which are weighed to order.
Gareth explains why he and his wife decided to open Fizzywiggs which sells all kinds of flavours of treats from retro to hard to find American goodies.
He said: “I was made redundant twice in five years and I found that as I was getting into my 50s I was finding it harder to get a job and when I did get an interview there was always the questions of my age.
“I was always classed as over qualified but that’s a bit silly.
“So we decided to take control over our own destiny.”
Nicky added: “We were at that time of life when if we did not do something we never would, so we are giving it a go.
“So far the shop has been very well received and it’s been very well supported by residents we’ve been very fortunate.
“If people come in and see something they have never tried before we are happy to let them have a free sample to taste it.”
The store sells sweets from the weird to wonderful. Nicky and Gareth’s mission statement is “selling smiles evoking memories”.
The shop has had sour challenges to see who could last the longest with strong sour treats.
It also had a nuclear bomb challenge, a cinnamon and chilli sweet made in Scotland.
