A RUTHIN man has died and another was taken to hospital after a Land Rover rolled down a popular off-road walking route.

Gareth Huw Roberts, aged 30, from the Ruthin area, died on Saturday, March 1, after the car overturned near a parking spot between Moel Arthur and Moel Llys Y Coed, on the Flintshire/Denbighshire border.

Residents reported seeing police helicopters in the area for several hours on Saturday night into Sunday morning.

One man, who did not wish to be named, said the passenger had been out of the vehicle and was guiding the driver down the slopes of Moel Llys Y Coed when the vehicle rolled over.

He described driving on the terrain as “impossible”.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the second man was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital as a precaution.

A North Wales Police spokesman said: "The Land Rover appears to have toppled down a hilly public area. Sadly, the driver sustained fatal injuries.”

No other vehicles are thought to have been involved and police are not treating the death as suspicious.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said they were called to reports of an overturned 4x4 just before 9.45pm.

They added: “Three crews in an emergency ambulance attended the scene where sadly a man had died. A second man was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital to be checked over.
