BALA volunteers made a new world record on St David’s Day with the largest Welsh cake ever made.
On Saturday, March 1, a Welsh cake, made and cooked outside Plas Yn Dre in Bala High Street on a skillet, weighed 21.95kg and measured around five foot in diameter securing the first ever Guinness World Record for the town.
Hundreds of people turned out for the day to see the masterpiece being prepared, mixed and cooked as well as visiting other town events held on the day.
The idea for a world record attempt came from Bala and Penllyn Tourism Group who wanted to do something extra special to mark St David's Day and attract trade into the town.
The cooking of the Welsh Cake drew a huge crowd and there was a rush to buy a piece of the Biggest Welsh Cake in the world.
There were a few tense moments as the team of cooks rolled the cake to the correct depth and then cooked the cake over very hot coals.
There was a roar from the crowd as the flip was successful and a cheer of joy when the top came off and the cake was perfectly browned the whole cake was sold, including offcuts and crumbs, within 15 minutes.
Melanie Williams, who runs Cysgod y Coed B&B and Self Catering Accommodation in Llanfor and is the chairwoman of the Bala and Penllyn Tourism Group helped organise the event.
She said: "We're so excited that we've managed to break the record for the world's biggest Welsh cake. We wanted to do something remarkable and memorable to celebrate St David's Day and to bring some buzz into Y Bala. What better way to put the town on the map than to secure our place in the Guinness Book of World Records?
“Not only has this been good for the local economy, we managed to sell over 200 slices of the record-breaking cake to raise money for local charities including Ty Gobaith, Macmillan and the Rotary.”
Melanie added: “We've been overwhelmed by the support of the local community and businesses who have embraced our efforts to attract people to the town and to put on a day which had something for all ages. It is also great to see the Welsh language being strengthened in the town.”
Bala Tourism Group that organised the event now will have to wait before they hear from the Guinness Book of Records before they know if their efforts are acknowledged by them.
To raise awareness of the World's Biggest Welsh Cake as part of Y Bala's St David's Day bash, a YouTube video was produced by Bala and Penllyn Tourism Group. This can be viewed at youtu.be/Ap7fmR65QuU.
