RESIDENTS and visitors to a popular tourist town have slammed the high street as “dangerous” and awful for parking.
Llangollen boasts of having more than 100,000 tourists visit every year but car parking continues to be an issue.
Betsi Cadwaldr University Health Board have been given permission to build a new health centre on a former hotel site, on condition the council can take charge of the car park for the public during out of hours.
When the Free Press asked the people of Llangollen how they think the town’s parking problem could improve, people suggested more in town parking and longer parking times.
Michael Windwood, from Llangollen, said: “I think the parking in town is adequate but a lot of it is out of town.
“So I don’t think using the health centre will work as it is too far from town especially for the old people and it’s dangerous along that road as there is not somewhere where it can be widened.”
Helen Iller, who was visiting Llangollen from Corwen, said: “There is not enough parking generally.
“Parking on the high street is pretty dangerous and the time given is only half an hour which isn’t enough time to get anything done.”
Llangollen resident Sue Hall said: “I live in the centre of town and can’t get parking outside of my home.
“In the summer the town gets very busy so there is a real need for more parking.
“Using the health centre for parking after hours isn’t going to help because parking after hours isn’t a problem and it’s far too far away and a bit dangerous to walk there.”
Merfyn Evans, visiting the town from Caergwrle, said: “If you come early it’s not a problem, if you are any later though it would be.
“I know that the Llangollen Pavilion is available. Though it’s quite far out of town and especially if it’s wet.”
But Sue Everall, from Corwen, was in Llangollen on a Friday afternoon, found she didn’t have trouble finding a car space.
She said: “I don’t really have a problem with parking.
“I usually try and get a free space but if I can’t get one of those spaces then I will use the car park which is priced very reasonably.”
