A CONTRACTOR has been appointed to improve the flood defences at the Glasdir estate in Ruthin.
Installation work will be carried out by Dawnus Construction, for the flood defences after the company was appointed by Denbighshire County Council.
The system is being manufactured by Ruthin Precast Concrete.
Work will commence on June 2, and is expected to take approximately two months to complete.
A spokesperson for the Glasdir Residents Committee said: “We welcome the news that the work is due to be completed by the autumn, following a series of delays.
Looking forward, we hope to be able to return to some sense of normality, without fear of further flooding. Hopefully this work will restore confidence of residents in their homes. Finally, we may be able to sleep soundly in our beds.”
Denbighshire County Council's lead member for public realm, David Smith, said: "Hopefully, this scheme will remove any remaining anxieties that the Glasdir residents still feel after the 2012 floods.
"We know it has been a long time coming, but there were a number of hurdles that had to be overcome before we could proceed."
Residents were consulted about the design of the scheme, and the costs are being shared between the council, the site developer, Taylor Wimpey, and the Welsh Government.
North Wales AM, Llyr Gruffydd said: “I’m pleased the work is finally starting because the residents of Glasdir need the security that I hope this will bring. “We’ll have to wait to see how the new flood defences withstand future events but hopefully good
lessons have been learned from the failings of the past.”
Clwyd West AM, Darren Millar, said: “I am really pleased that a start date has now been confirmed. I know residents living on the estate are anxious for this work to be carried out as soon as possible and will therefore be happy to hear that it only a matter of weeks before work gets underway.
“The contract period is 12 weeks, but if the weather is reasonable, Denbighshire County Council have said they expect the work to be completed in around 2 months.
“I look forward to seeing the works completed so that those living on the estate can have the flood protection they deserve.”
