A SHIRTLESS man climbed on to the roof of a house and threw slates on to the road below.

The 32-year-old, who has not yet been named, made his way on to the roof of the property in Regent Street, Llangollen at about 3.45pm yesterday.

Police were called to the scene shortly afterwards and sealed off the road, moving the crowd away from the house to prevent anyone getting hurt.

The man was eventually arrested after coming down from the roof shortly before 6pm.

A Llangollen resident, who did not wish to be named, described the scene as chaotic and added the man could be seen holding a machete. The eyewitness, who was at the scene for about 90 minutes, said: “It’s quite a steep roof and the bloke slipped three or four times while he was walking about – he was lucky he didn’t fall.

“You could hear him shouting. I think he had fallen out with his girlfriend.”

And according to the eyewitness, matters were complicated by another incident nearby.

He added: “There was another incident in the main street.

“An old man fell over and cracked his head open. It took about an hour and a half for the ambulance to come.

“Luckily there was an off-duty nurse in the street who took care of him.”

Another Llangollen resident, Phil Robinson, described the police presence as “considerable” and said it looked like a “full-scale incident”.

He said: “There was a lad up on the roof of a three-story town house
“Some residents said they heard a window being smashed from the inside. It is a flat which is rented out, and used to be a hairdresser’s salon.”

He added the man could be seen staggering about on the roof while he was on the phone to someone.

Mr Robinson told the Leader Regent Street was sealed off up to the lights on Castle Street, meaning pedestrians and motorists could not get through the town centre.

A further eyewitness, Mark Gunning, said the man was threatening to jump and at one point he threw slates from the roof.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “At approximately 3.45pm today police were called to Regent Street in Llangollen following a report of a male on a house roof threatening to jump off.

“Officers were supported by other emergency services and police-trained negotiators were deployed to the scene to engage with the male, a 32-year-old from the local area.

“The road was sealed off during this time to protect members of the public as the male had been throwing slates down on to the road below.

“He eventually came down off the roof at 5.50pm and was safely arrested without any injury to anyone.

“He was then transferred to hospital to be medically assessed prior to being questioned by officers.”
