FRIENDS of a Denbigh man who died in a quarry pool tried in vain to rescue him, it was revealed at the opening of an inquest.

Christopher William McCreadie, 20, died while swimming in a pool at Denbigh quarry on May 17.

At the hearing in Ruthin John Gittins, the coroner for North Wales East and Central, said he understood that Mr McCreadie, of Love Lane, Denbigh, had jumped into the pool from a ledge about nine metres high and got into difficulties after swimming about 60 metres.

Pathologist Dr Mark Atkinson deferred a decision on the cause of death pending toxicology tests, and the hearing was adjourned until October 31.
