HEALTH Minister Mark Drakeford today (Thursday) toured new treatment facilities for patients in the emergency quarter at Glan Clwyd Hospital.

The new centre at the Bodelwyddan site, which will open on June 5, is part of the on-going redevelopment of the hospital which has benefited from a £90m investment from the Welsh Government.

The new larger facility means that the GP out-of-hours service, emergency department, acute medicine unit and surgical assessment unit can all come together under one roof.

There is also a separate minors and major illness/injury area, a new paediatrics area, new clinical decision unit, new resus room and separate ambulance entrance and storage for crews.

The redesigned space will also improve the flow of patients through the emergency department.

Mr Drakeford said: “The emergency quarter at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd is an impressive development for the hospital, which will improve the working environment for staff and provide better services for patients.

“It is the result of significant investment in the hospital and shows how we are delivering on commitments to improve facilities in the health service across North Wales.”

Ysbyty Glan Clwyd site manager Ellen Greer said: “We were very pleased to welcome the Health Minister to the new emergency quarter to see the work that has gone in to produce an improved emergency care facility for our surrounding communities.

"We were also very grateful that he was able to meet some of our staff who have contributed to the new build right from the beginning of the design process to the finished article."

The redevelopment of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd includes removing asbestos from the hospital - it was commonly used as a fire retardant in the 1970s when the hospital was built.

This work has provided an opportunity to redesign and relocate a number of services, including emergency care. Other developments include a new critical care unit and new cardiac catheter laboratory.
