A 41-year-old man appeared in court accused of blackmailing a “high-profile sports star.”

Eifion Howatson faces two allegations that on June 16 he demanded £5,000 from two men.

Magistrates at Llandudno freed him from custody on conditional bail to live at Bro Clwyd, Ruthin, and not contact the alleged victims.

In court was a detective superintendent from North Wales police’s major crime team who is also the senior investigating officer in the case.

Prosecutor Tracey Willingham said it involved a “high-profile sports star.” She didn’t object to bail.

Howatson was bailed until June 30 at Mold crown court. He was represented by solicitor Craig Hutchinson.
