The record attempt in Bala

The people of Bala are world beaters when it comes to Welsh cakes - and that's official.

On St David's Day this year, the people of Bala turned out in their hundreds to watch a team from Bala and Penllyn Tourism Association and Ysgol y Berwyn attempt to create the biggest Welsh cake in the world.

There were some tense moments as the team mixed the ingredients, rolled the cake to the correct depth and cooked it over hot charcoal. Cheers rang out when cake was successfully flipped, the steel sheet removed and the smell of freshly baked Welsh cake filled the air.

Guinness World Records has now confirmed that the final weight of 21.7 kg and 1.5 m in diameter is indeed the largest Welsh Cake in the world.

"It was a fantastic team effort and all our hard work has been rewarded”, said Melanie Williams, chairman of Bala and Penllyn Tourism Association.

It’s a wonderful achievement.

We are proud that Bala is now the home of this record. The town has been so supportive and we hope to offer another day of amazing events next year.”

The whole cake, over 200 pieces, sold like hotcakes and was gone within 15 minutes. Even the 'in-between' pieces were sold.

The day raised £800 for good causes.
