ST ASAPH’S scarecrow competition is underway with the city's residents and businesses embracing this year's book or film theme.

All entries this year are based on personalities, characters, stories or events that relate to favourite films and books.

Some of the offerings on display around St Asaph include Mary Poppins, Jaws, characters from Frozen, as well as more traditional characters such as Long John Silver.

Elsie Powell, secretary of St Asaph Community Association, who organised the competition said: "There haven’t been as many entries as last year, but the ones that we have are really good ones.

There are some great efforts across the board in all the categories, we’re really pleased.”

Entrants must design their own scarecrow in accordance with the theme, and display it between July 25 and August 2 at the front of their home, school or business.

Nora Wilks, whose Long John Silver scarecrow stands outside The Old Palace sheltered housing said, "I think the scarecrow competition is great, it's brilliant fun.

"I made the scarecrow, alongside my friends Anne Cartwright and Di Adderley, and we really enjoyed gathering all the materials and assembling it. It’s just a fun thing to be able to do."

This year there are four categories - children (under 16s), residents, schools, and businesses.

Judging will take place on Friday by St Asaph mayor Peter Scott, and Rhys Williams, partner at Swayne Johnson solicitors, who have sponsored the competition.

Winners will be announced at St Asaph's annual summer fair in Roe Plas meadow on Saturday. The winners from each category will receive £25 and the overall winner will get £100.
