DENBIGHSHIRE A-level students are celebrating excellent results this year.

Ruthin School is celebrating its best results ever.

This year’s batch of 38 students in the upper sixth achieved outstanding results, the best that the school has ever seen.

The percentage of grades this year at A* and A have increased to 69.33% (last year 60.23%) and the A* to B grades have increased from 81% to 90%. Just over 35% of all grades are A*.

Many of the students have already had their first choice university place confirmed, with five students going to Cambridge and several others to top ranking universities including UCL, Imperial, Durham, Edinburgh, Bristol, Exeter and Nottingham.

The top student at Ruthin School this year is Shelly Wang, who has achieved 5 A* grades at A-level and one A grade at AS Level.

She also achieved 600/600 in her further mathematics modules and will go to Downing College, Cambridge to study engineering.

Toby Belfield, principal, said: “Our A-level results, university successes and strong academic outcomes are the reasons why parents choose to send their children to Ruthin School. The School is expanding with an ever increasing number of young people wanting to be part of our success. We will see the pupil numbers in September increase from 230 to 280, the highest number in Ruthin School’s history.

Of course, our students and staff understand the meaning of hard work – and it is this hard work, from all associated with Ruthin School, that produces these outstanding achievements.

I am delighted with today’s success and congratulate all our young people who are now moving on to their next stage of education.”

At Ysgol Glan Clwyd students are also celebrating excellent A-level results, maintaining the very high standards of previous years.

When all grades including the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification are considered, 82% achieved A to C grades.

Headteacher Martin Davies said: “Students and staff deserve praise for their hard work and dedication over the last two years. The students should also be commended for their valuable contribution to extra-curricular activities and services to the community.

Almost all students have obtained the grades or points score required for them to enter the university of their choice - attaining their personal, and often challenging targets.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our students the very best as they take the next step in their careers, and thank their parents/guardians, who have given valuable support to their children and the school over the years.”
