BREAD was the theme for week three of the hit BBC TV show featuring a former Hanmer woman as a contestant.
Now down to the final 10 bakers, Diana Beard, who now lives in Whitchurch, Shropshire, is the oldest ever competitor and she certainly rose to the challenge.
This time Bake Off tent hopefuls faced tests from judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry of creating 12 rye bread rolls, four ciabattas and a show-stopping filled loaf.
For the first challenge Diana made cheese and walnut flower pot rolls with Shropshire Blue and Stilton cheeses.
She said: “I have not baked with rye flour much at all so it’s concentrating the mind.
“I have not made much bread in the past but this week I've done a lot.”
She was the only one to add their filling before proving the dough.
Rye flour has a low gluten content so it is tricky to bake with as you have to really work the gluten to get the air in the dough enabling the bread to rise.
Commenting on Diana's rolls judge Mary said: “Their appearance was not very appealing.”
But Paul said they did have a good flavour.
The technical test was baking a ciabatta bread when the bakers had to follow one of Paul’s recipes but were only given the basic instructions to follow and had to follow their noses on the finer points.
In this test Diana came seventh out of the 10 contestants.
In the show-stopping final challenge of creating a filled loaf, Diana choose to make an UK/Italian inspired pinwheel tear and share loaf filled with spinach and ham.
Paul said: “It’s big and bold but has a bit of a soggy bottom. The flavour, however, is delicious.”
Star baker this week was Louis Troyano, 42, from Poynton, but failing to rise to the top and heading home was 33-year-old Jordan Cox from Nottingham.
Next week Diana and her fellow bakers face desserts.
