THE thought of living in the Stone Age would terrify most of us.

But one Cynwyd man voluntarily signed up to experience life at a time when humans lived in caves and jungles with only two aims: to defend themselves against wild animals and to find food.

Nick Roden was selected as one of 24 participants for the Channel 5 programme 10,000 BC: Two Tribes which is due to start tonight, Wednesday, January 20, at 10pm.

He and his fellow contestants were dropped into a remote part of Bulgaria for the filming of the 10-part series, an “epic endurance test” which tested them to the limit.

According to Channel 5, participants were put through dehydration, extreme weight loss and near-death experiences in this “journey on an epic scale” in what it claims is “TV’s toughest social experiment”.

Nick, who has previously studied outdoor education and leadership skills at college, is currently working in Dusseldorf, Germany for an events management company but has his sights set on a career in the Royal Marines.

He said: "I have always enjoyed working outdoors and when I saw the advert for the television programme I just thought it would be an exciting opportunity.

“I'm glad I took part as I learned a lot.''

No stranger to adventure in the wild, the 20-year-old has previously spent six months working on a farm in North West Iceland to which he is due to return in late spring.

His proud mum Karen said: “I can't say much about it as he had to sign a contract to make sure he didn't give any of what happens away.

“He’s never been one to turn down a challenge and he said it had been an amazing experience and one he would like to try again.”

The show will see the 24 contestants taken from their comfortable 21st century lifestyle and plunged headlong into the Stone Age where they will be pushed to their physical, mental and emotional limits as they source their own food and master their surroundings which includes wild jackals!

“Unless they learn to fish, forage and hunt - they will starve,” Channel 5 says.

To see if Nick can survive the experience for two testing months watch the show on Channel 5 tonight at 10pm.
