A YOUNG walker was rescued from the top of Moel Famau after a slip.

Volunteers from North East Wales Search and Rescue (NEWSAR), who were carrying out a training course in nearby Loggerheads on Sunday, arrived at the scene 25 minutes after the call to provide treatment.

Gerald Davison, deputy team leader for NEWSAR, said: “We were running a casualty care training weekend at our training base in Loggerheads and we were just about to finish when we got the call out at about 3pm to say a young man had hurt himself at the summit of Moel Famau.

“That is one of the few places we can drive to the top of it and we had two team doctors so he couldn’t have been more lucky.

“It was a case of administering some pain relief, packaging him for the stretcher and taking him down.

“It was just a very simple slip. It could happen to anyone.”

Mr Davison said the walker received an injury to his leg after the slip.

The young walker was taken down to the foot of the hill, where waiting ambulance crews took him to Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan.

Mr Davison took a video of the rescue operation, which shows about a dozen volunteers providing first aid before taking him down the hill.

He told the Leader: “The video shows the team at the summit, first waiting for the pain relief we had administered to take effect, before loading him onto a stretcher and into our Land Rover.

“Then the slow and careful drive down before hand over to our partners in the Welsh Ambulance Service.

“We wish our casualty a speedy recovery.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We had a call at 2.54pm on Sunday to reports a man had injured himself near Jubilee Tower atop Moel Famau.

“We sent a crew in an emergency ambulance, and the man was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.”

The man’s injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
