The family of a former rugby player who died in 2014 say his club’s decision to name its new extension after him means a lot to them  Bryan ‘Yogi’ Davies’s family took part in a day of matches at Clwb Rygbi Y Bala to mark the opening of the new extension to the clubhouse. It was officially opened on Saturday by Welsh Rugby Union president Dennis Gethin, with WRU North Wales representative Alwyn Jones and WRU director Martyn Davies also present. Yogi, as he was known, was paralysed after a scrum collapsed during what was meant to be his last game for the club in 2007. He was paralysed from the neck down and wrote about his struggles in a book, The Scrum that Changed my Life, which was published weeks after his death from pneumonia in 2013. Bryan’s daughter, Teleri, says her father worked tirelessly on the plans for the extension and seeing those plans realised meant a great deal. “It was an amazing day,” she said. “There was a really good turnout as well and it was really nice to see the support from the community there. “Even though it was such a nice day, it was quite emotional for us as a family as my father wasn’t there to see it. “He’d have been so pleased to see where the club is at today. “It means a lot for us as a family, especially because he had all the planning done for the extension, so it’s nice to see it up When he passed away he hadn’t see any of the building or anything happening so it’s nice to see what he’s acheived  “Even thought it’s been four years, it’s amazing to see everything he contributed to the community still developing today.” Teleri took part in a women’s rugby match, having got together a new over-18s team to play the original Y Bala ladies team her father used to coach. Teleri’s brother, Ilan, refereed. Clwb Rygbi Y Bala’s choir performed prior to the unveiling. It had been formed to fulfil Bryan’s wishes for a rugby club choir to sing at his funeral. As a member of the choir stated.”it was nice to sing at a happy occasion”  The new extension consists of a large dining area and kitchen, along with a viewing gallery and storage. It was built with a grant of £200,000 from The Millenium Stadium Charitable Trust, the Welsh Rugby Union, Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd, Cist Gwynedd and The Welsh Assembly, with the club raising £40,000. The women’s match was preceded by junior games and followed by a hard fought game of Bala veterans vs North Wales Barbarians, refereed by former Bala player Elfyn Morris-Roberts.
