A girl from Corwen was left speechless after a triathlon club raised thousands to buy her a specially designed racing tricycle.

Elan Williams, aged seven suffers from quadraplegic cerebral palsy but loves to take part in horse riding and triathlon events alongside her friends in the Ruthin Tri Stars.

Her parents took her down to a specialist adaptive sport shop Quest 88 in Shropshire to see the bike. According to mum Ceris Williams, Elan fell in love with the bike at first sight.

“Elan was fundraising for the Tri Stars in Ruthin but we went on a visit to see the bike, she sat on it and fell in love with it,” Ceris said.

“When we saw the price, we looked at maybe getting some funding for next year, but then Roy, Elan’s coach said that because we were fundraising for the club, why not concentrate on the bike?

“We were hoping to pull together a deposit for it, but A&R Wine Bar in Corwen got in touch and did a weekend raising money for her.

“The Prince in Cynwyd put a raffle together, and Elan had friends donate Easter egg money as well.

“We had all kinds of envelopes through the front door, it was quite emotional, I can’t believe it, we do live in a nice part of the world, we’re really thankful. Hopefully she can give something back, it’s been really nice.

Ceris says seeing Elan on the tricycle for the first time was an emotional moment.

“It was something we weren’t expecting, the fundraising everyone did, we hadn’t thought peoreple would do such a thing for her.

“Elan was really excited, she was speachless.

“It’s a recumbent tricycle, she brought it home and she went round the school car park and she was picking up some speed. The profile’s so low and it’s all aluminium, so it’s pretty quick.”

Roy Healey, 49, the coach at Ruthin Tri Stars was amazed at how people took Elan to heart.

“We’re a community club, everything goes back into the athletes - the coaching and education for the kids.

“When we set up the crowdfunding we we were hoping for £300 or £400 but within a couple of days it was over £1,000 and then by the end of the week it was over £2,000

“We’ve raised well over £3,500, which is brilliant. The trike is specially adapted so it’ll grow with her unless she grows over 6ft 2.

“She’s the club’s first paratriathlete, so it was a proud moment for us as well as mum and dad.

“We’re going to get a few extra bits and pieces to help, we’re just waiting for the money to come in now.” he added.

“When she saw it, well, it was quite amazing for that young lady to be speachless, she’s always telling me off, she’s always got something good to say.”
