The conversion of a redundant church in Prees has received the green light.

Paul Garvey submitted his proposal to turn the United Reform Church on Mill Street into a home last November.

He received the support of Prees Parish Council and last week planning officers from Shropshire Council gave the plans to go-ahead.

Case officer Alison Groom said: "The building is now considered to be redundant as a place of worship, and as such its sensitive adaptation and re-use can be supported by both local and national policy.

"The proposed conversion is considered to be acceptable given that it is sympathetic to the historic character of the existing building and surrounding area, while it will also secure its long term conservation as a heritage asset."

The site had previously gained planning permission in 2009 to be converted into four homes, with this renewed in 2012, but since then no further applications were made until last year.

The church was originally built as a Congregation Chapel in 1862 and has and associated burial ground.

Ms Groom added: "Although not a listed building or within the Prees Conservation Area, as example of a non-conformist church the building is consider to be a ‘non-designated heritage asset’."
